Exploring the Flavors of Peru: Gringo Roasters and El Palto Coffee
At Gringo Roasters, every cup of coffee is a story—a journey from the hands of dedicated farmers to your morning ritual. Our single-origin Peru Coffee is no exception, embodying the vibrant spirit of the Amazonian Andes and the commitment of the El Palto cooperative to sustainability, quality, and community.
Discovering El Palto
Our journey to Peru brought us to the breathtaking region of Amazonas, nestled high in the Andes at altitudes of 1,600–1,800 meters. Here, the Asociación de Productores Cafetaleros Juan Marco El Palto (JUMARP), affectionately known as “El Palto,” cultivates some of the most exceptional coffee beans in the world.
Founded in 2003 by just 35 small farmers, El Palto has grown to include 189 members, 40 of whom are women. This cooperative is more than just a group of coffee producers—it’s a vibrant community dedicated to sustainable farming practices, gender equity, and improving the lives of its members. The coop’s 550 hectares of organic and Fair Trade Certified coffee are a testament to their commitment to both quality and ethical production.
The Flavors of Peru
We fell in love with El Palto’s coffee during our cupping sessions, where its distinct flavor profile stood out. This Grade 1, SHG, EP-certified coffee boasts:
• Medium Acidity: A balanced brightness that adds vibrancy to each sip.
• Smooth Body: A silky texture that provides a satisfying foundation.
• Lemon and Herbal Notes: Refreshing highlights that invigorate the palate.
• Chocolate Undertones: A rich, comforting depth that ties it all together.
The harmonious interplay of these flavors creates a coffee that transitions seamlessly from indulgent richness to crisp brightness, leaving a memorable finish.
Sustainability at Its Core
Sustainability is at the heart of El Palto’s mission. The cooperative’s practices go beyond producing excellent coffee—they aim to preserve the natural beauty of their environment while fostering economic growth for their members. The inclusion of female farmers on the coop’s Board of Directors reflects a commitment to equity, ensuring every voice is heard and valued.
Roasting to Perfection
Once we brought these incredible beans back to our roastery, we worked tirelessly to perfect the roast. A medium roast was chosen to highlight the beans’ natural sweetness and complex flavors. This careful process ensures that every cup of Gringo Roasters Peru Coffee is a celebration of the Amazonian Andes’ unique terroir and the dedication of El Palto’s farmers.
